What Hill AFB is

• The 75th Air Base Wing hosts Hill Air Force Base and supports about 27,000 active duty, civilian and contractor personnel, including the Ogden Air Logistics Complex, two fighter wings and 50 other associate units.
• Hill AFB is described by the Air Force as its second largest base by population and geographic size; the 75th ABW also operates the 1.1 million acre Utah Test and Training Range.
• The Ogden Air Logistics Complex employs more than 8,100 military, civilian and contract personnel at Hill AFB and provides depot-level maintenance for the F-35, F-22, F-16, A-10, C-130 and T-38.
• The 388th Fighter Wing (active duty) and 419th Fighter Wing (Air Force Reserve) fly and maintain the F-35A together in a Total Force partnership; Hill received its 78th and final F-35A in December 2019.
• The 388th Fighter Wing has about 2,000 military and civilian personnel and 78 F-35A jets.
• Hill AFB sits in Davis County about 30 miles north of Salt Lake City and borders Layton, Clearfield, Riverdale, Roy and Sunset. It is named for Maj. Ployer Peter Hill.

Gates and base access

• South Gate: open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. South Gate Visitor Center: Mon-Fri 7 a.m.-4 p.m., closed weekends and federal holidays, 801-777-8631.
• West Gate: Mon-Fri 4 a.m.-10 p.m.; weekends 8 a.m.-6 p.m.; closed federal holidays and AFMC Family Days (per Feb. 5, 2025 update).
• North Gate: Mon-Fri 4:30 a.m.-5 p.m.; closed weekends and federal holidays. Commercial vehicle inspections at the North Gate run Mon-Fri 6 a.m.-3 p.m.
• The North Gate replaced the former Roy Gate; it sits farther south than the old gate, adding queuing room away from the congested 5600 South interchange.
• Visitors without base credentials need a sponsor, a valid state ID, a background check and a visitor pass; telephone sponsorship is not authorized. Passes are issued at the South Gate Visitor Control Center (weekdays) or by the South Gate entry controller after hours.
• Gate hours change periodically; confirm on hill.af.mil before travel.

Nearby communities and commute

• Cities sharing a border with the base: Layton, Clearfield, Riverdale, Roy and Sunset (largest border with Clearfield and Layton).
• Third-party estimates put Clearfield and Clinton about 6 minutes from the base, Layton about 12 and Ogden about 18. Actual times depend on the gate and time of day.

Utah taxes and car registration for military families

• Nonresident service members do not pay Utah income tax on active duty military pay (subtracted on TC-40A, code 82).
• Utah military retirement pay is not exempt, but Utah residents may claim a nonrefundable Military Retirement Credit (code AJ) equal to the state income tax rate times the military retirement pay included in federal AGI, which effectively offsets the state tax on that pay.
• Utah's income tax rate was reduced to 4.5% in 2025 and to 4.45% in 2026; the military retirement credit was created by the Legislature in 2021.
• Active-duty personnel stationed in Utah may keep vehicles registered in their state of legal residence; if they register in Utah they may qualify for exemption from property tax and age-based fees (bring LES and orders). Sales/use tax is due on vehicles bought in Utah.

VA home loan basics

• No down payment is required as long as the sales price is not higher than the appraised value; no PMI or MIP; no prepayment penalty.
• VA funding fee for purchase loans: first use 2.15% with less than 5% down, 1.5% with 5%+ down, 1.25% with 10%+ down; subsequent use 3.3% with less than 5% down.
• Veterans receiving VA disability compensation, eligible surviving spouses receiving DIC, and active-duty Purple Heart recipients (among others) are exempt from the funding fee.
• A borrower with full entitlement has no VA loan limit (subject to lender approval and appraisal); county loan limits apply only when calculating remaining entitlement.
